TOUR SCHEDULE

June Tuesday the 19th: HARBOUR TOUR

Cartagena has always been considered the best natural harbour in the Western Mediterranean, mainly because the hills that surround it sheltered ships from the wind during winter. By the 18th century it became completely fortified with coastal batteries. We will start our tour strolling through the sea front in town, to get to know some of the most impressive naval facilities from that time. Later on we will take a boat that, after sailing us around the harbor, will drop us by the main of those fortifications, the so-called Christmas Fort, for you to enjoy both history & scenery from a different point of view.

Meeting Time & Point: 11 AM (Ends 2 PM) – Main Tourist Office, Old Town Hall

Price: 20 € (including both tickets for Fort & Boat) – See Map

July Thursday the 5th: ROMAN CARTAGENA

If you have a fancy for ancient art & history, this is your tour, as we will be entering an archaeological site  with completely unusual 4 meter tall walls, belonging to original roman dwellings and baths, just recently being discovered after lying under soil for nearly 19 centuries? That’s Cartagena’s Roman Forum Neighbourhood, a true local wonder even with live archaeology, as it is still being excavated. Tour will be resumed after this paying a visit to the remains of the Theatre’s entrance (the so called Porticus) where some unique mosaics can be enjoyed

Meeting Time and Place: 10 AM (Ends Noon) – Old Town Hall’s Tourist Office

Price: 16 € (including entrance to the Roman Forum site & the Porticus) – See Map

July Thursday the 12th: NAVAL CARTAGENA + TAPAS

From the 18th century on, Cartagena has been one of the three main Navy hubs in Spain, the city having a rich military heritage. In this tour we will be visiting some of the main highlights of this rich past, such as Peral’s Submarine and the Naval Museum, full of models and artifacts belonging to the two last centuries. The tour will be ended by entering the so called Inmates and Slaves Headquarters (a former prison and an quite impressive building from this period), before enjoying some tapas and drinks.

Meeting Time and Place: 10.30 AM (Ends 1 PM) – Old Town Hall’s Tourist Office

Price: 18 € – See Map

Ignacio Benedicto Albadalejo

You know something? Not many people had ever heard about Cartagena just 20 years ago… Mainly because the city, although having a really ancient heritage, had neglected it for quite a long time. By the 18th century, it was turned into a military hub, and over the second half of the 20th century, we lived through a 40 year long dictatorship, during which my hometown was like a waste land, talking about heritage. But something changed by the end of the millenium: all of a sudden, and just by chance, the remains of a roman theatre, carved by the slope of the main hill in the city, were found. This meant a major turning point for locals such as me, who have always considered the past as the root feeding the present, and being actually eager to bring back to life its too long neglected history, I also chose to change my job: from working as a journalist for papers whose owners told what to write, I became a self-taught tourist guide, and a fully licensed one after passing the required exam… Then starting a new chapter of my life in which I keep on telling stories, that hopefully will interest you.
