Murcia, capital city of the region, is a very enjoyable town full of lively squares, completely built over flatground, and home for both islamic and baroque heritages, such as you will discover through this routes.
The main highlight in Murcia is, undoubtedly, its gorgeous-looking cathedral, a temple that took 400 years in the making and whose magnificent baroque façade surprises the visitor, but the city is much more than just that wonderful display of art and religion, as its beautiful laid-out ground plan immediately calls for a stroll through its narrow streets. Next step in the tour, the luxurious late 19th century eclectic Casino, actually an exclusive membership for the local elite. From here the itinerary will be resumed, always over flat ground, to cover all the other main squares in the city, for you to see with you own eyes how locals actually enjoy life here: out in the street, chatting and sharing a drink, thus taking advantage of the everlasting spring prevailing in this corner of Spain. Tour will be ended by the 18th century stone bridge that crosses the river, from which really nice views can be enjoyed.
First built in 825 A.D. by Muslim armies that had previously invaded Spain one century earlier, Murcia City has plenty of moorish remains that have to be discovered with keen eyes. Our tour will get started by the river before heading for the remains of the 12th century wall that surrounded the city. From there we will begin to follow its remaining traces; doing so will first lead us to the City Museum and then to a second facility which houses the remains of a 13th century summer palace including an original pond, amazingly well preserved. In our way in-between both, we will find more remains belonging to the outlying moorish urban area, recently discovered while building of a Parking Lot. Tour will be ended by spotting the remains of the muslim mosque over which the now standing Cathedral was started to build in the 14th century, just after the Moor’s defeat.
