Alicante, the capital of the Costa Blanca, was known in Roman times as Lucentum, “the city of light”. The bright sunshine from the Mediterranean is filling every single corner of this cosmopolitan city.
We will start our tour at Santa Barbara’s Castle, the largest fortress in Spain located on top of Mount Benacantil. From its walls we can enjoy the best views of the city, its surroundings and the coastal strip along the Bay of Alicante, including the small island of Nueva Tabarca, a real shelter for pirates during centuries. Then your guide will lead you to the famous Promenade of Spain, with its tricolored mosaic made of marble tiles and flanked by beautiful palms. A stroll through downtown Alicante will take us to the City Hall square, a jewel of the baroque civil architecture, and to the sober and impressive Saint Nicholas Cathedral.
It’s impossible to talk about Alicante without mentioning its Hogueras de San Juan (Saint John’s Bonfires), those days in June when the city lives in a permanent ectasy of beauty, fire and music. A visit to the Museum of Hogueras will allow you to know more about the festival in any season.
