Carved by the Segura River, the scenery and history of the Ricote Valley will delight you. It is considered to be the last home of the Moriscos (muslims converted to christians), after they were expelled from Spain by the King Felipe III in the 17th century. Due to the special conditions of the valley, they were allowed to stay in this location for a few more years. The mixture of the green fruit trees, the palm trees and the deep contrast with the arid hills in the background makes the Ricote Valley one of the most picturesque areas in Spain. The first stop of this tour will be in the town of Abarán at the “Noria Grande”, the largest working waterwheel in Europe, dating back to the 19th century but designed according to the patterns given by the muslim settlers in the Middle Ages. A scenic drive through the Valley will take us to the town of Blanca where we will enjoy breathtaking views of the Segura River from the viewpoint called “Alto Bayna”. We will drive then through the Solvente canyon, with its rocky cliffs, the gate to the southern half of the valley. We will stop at the cosy village of Ojós and take a stroll through its streets full of charm. Finally a stop will be made at Archena, the capital and largest town in the valley, known since roman times by its famous spa. Here you will have the chance to enjoy a hearty lunch before returning to the ship.
