Cartagena has always been considered as the best natural harbour in the Western Mediterranean, mainly on account of the hills that surround it, that sheltered ships from the wind during winter. By the 18th century it became completely fortified with coastal batteries. We will start our tour strolling along the sea front, to get to know some of the most impressive naval facilities from that time. Later on we will take a boat that, after sailing us around the harbour, will drop us by the main of those batteries, the so-called Christmas Fort, for you to enjoy both history and scenery from a different point of view.

Cartagena’s major change in its long history arrived  by the 18th century, when the city was turned into an important headquarters for the spanish Armada, thus meaning a profound transformation, both physically and in character. A century later, the finding of big amounts of lead in its vecinity led to an Art-Nouveau Heyday that run up to the end of the First World War. Very hard times were to follow after that wealthy period; the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War brought the first civil bombings over civil population in history -the city being the only of the 3 main naval bases in the country sticking to the losing side-, as the fight was actually a rehearsal for the 2nd World War.
